Celluloid In Japan

In 1877, Japan first imported celluloid as sample goods through Kobe. The zaibatsu corporatized celluloid manufacturing, and since natural camphor, obtained from cinnamomum camphora, was exclusively distributed in the Far East, Japan\'s celluloid production flourished, eventually accounting for 40% of global production.

After World War II in 1952, celluloid exports constituted over 50% of Japan\'s total exports, contributing significantly to postwar rehabilitation. However, the mass production era and the rise of easily processed oil-based plastics caused a decline in celluloid production due to its labor-intensive and complex manufacturing process.

In 1994, China adopted Japanese techniques to produce celluloid, marking the end of Japanese-made celluloid production in 1996. Today, celluloid is used in various applications such as ping-pong balls, eyeglass frames, writing materials, picks, and accordion bodies.

*History of KYOTO CELLULOID*

The history of Kyoto Celluloid Fountain Pens is a fascinating journey that intertwines tradition, innovation, and the resurrection of a nearly lost art. Celluloid, the world\'s oldest natural resin crafted from wood and cotton fibers, boasts a distinct texture and vibrant colors that set it apart from petroleum-based resins. It was once on the brink of obscurity, but Kyoto Celluloid\'s story begins with a commitment to recovering these materials and techniques.

Celluloid patterns are created by layering and press-molding materials crushed into cullet. The resulting patterns and shine can vary greatly depending on the original plate\'s surface and sides. In the past, cutting the original plate into a pipe shape often led to uneven patterns and a loss of the material\'s original beauty. To address this issue, Japan introduced a groundbreaking \"rolling\" technology in 1984, which exposed only the most beautiful parts of the product to the surface. This innovation received high acclaim in a market that valued aesthetics.

However, celluloid\'s challenging processing and handling characteristics led to its gradual replacement by petroleum-based resins over time. The production of celluloid dwindled, and the unique technology behind it faced the risk of being forgotten. Fortunately, Kyoto Celluloid\'s story takes a turn toward preservation and evolution.

The company had the opportunity to receive guidance from the developers of the rolling technology (PLATINUM) , allowing them to master the art and adapt it with modern techniques. Since then, under the Kyoto Celluloid brand, they have provided a range of pens that feature bright colors and unique patterns, from traditional to innovative designs. The meticulous process from raw materials to the finished pen involves drying and cutting, a two-week drying period, and finally, cutting the material to the length of a single pen

Kyoto Celluloid Fountain Pens stand as a testament to the dedication of artisans and the harmonious blend of tradition and technology. By reviving the intricate art of celluloid production, they offer a rare and distinctive writing instrument that honors the past while embracing the present.

*KYOTO CELLULOID MODEL: CIGAR SHAPE*

Kyoto Celluloid currently have 2 flagship model which are the Cigar Shape and the Cylinder Type. Across their writing instrument, they also sell both fountain pen options and ballpoint options. This Model specifically is the cigar shape model from Kyoto Celluloid. It is characterized by a rounded top & bottom. The narrow-shaped body is super comfortable on hand & a shark fin-like pen clip with a \"Kyoto Celluloid\" written across the clip.

This design is very unique in that it boasts simplicity & luxury! It really brings the natural properties of Celluloid to light!

Whether you are an avid collector or a daily user of fountain pens, Schmidt Iridium Point nibs are a reliable choice for enhancing your writing experience. A Schmidt Iridium Point nib offers a smooth and consistent writing experience. The iridium tipping material allows the nib to glide effortlessly across the paper, providing a pleasant and controlled writing experience.

*SAKURA : CHEERY BLOSSOM PINK & WHITE CELLULOID*

The main feature of this pen is its colorway. It boasts a natural marble pink and white pattern that Kyoto Celluloid has aptly named \"Cherry Blossom.\" What sets it apart is the use of celluloid material, which imparts a natural color to the pen, as opposed to relying on PVD coating or other color coatings. This results in exceptional longevity for the pen. Even if it sustains scratches or dents, the color remains consistent and won\'t reveal any hidden layers. Should the pen accumulate heavy scratches over extended use, a simple polish can effortlessly restore it to its original pristine condition.

*How to Use*

The pen uses an international, European standard converter & cartridge system. and this pen will include a converter in the package.

Item Condition Grade for Engeika Vintage Fountain Pen: Please Check Our Vintage Fountain Pen Grade list and read the item\'s condition list to see the Pen\'s actual grade ratings

All our pens are original and authentic because they\'re sourced directly from the owners of fountain pen collectors, factory owners in the 40s who\'s sons/daughters have sold their grandparent\'s fountain pen old stock and hence cant be sourced online. But for an even more detailed description of our pens condition, we have provided a grade tier list to help you determine if this is the pen for you

S Tier - Almost like Brand New: This pen is in exceptional condition, almost as if it were brand new. There are no signs of rust on the clip, and the original filling system is still intact and does not require replacement. The cap and piston filler, if applicable, screw on and off smoothly without any difficulties. The nib color is vivid with limited to no scratches. Any hairline scratches are barely visible, and there are no cracks on the pen. The pen feels smooth, polished, and shiny.

A Tier - Excellent Condition: This pen is in excellent condition with only minor flaws. There may be small chips on the nib, but no rust is present. Hairline scratches may be visible on the body, cap, and nib. The nib color remains consistent, although small scratches may be seen upon close inspection. The pen can be easily screwed on and off, and the filling system works properly. The original filling system is intact with no cracks on the body of the pen. The pen still feels smooth, polished, and shiny.

B Tier - Good Condition: This pen is in good condition and is perfectly usable. It may have some rust on the clip and trim. The nib color may have changed due to weathering or ink stains. The filling system has been replaced with a new one, possibly because the original one had hardened over time and needed replacement. There are no cracks on the pen, but there may be hairline scratches present.

C Tier - Fair Condition: This pen is in fair condition and is functional, but it has noticeable scratches on the body and cap. The trim may be rusted or chipped. Although there are no cracks, the filling system also requires replacement. The nib color may have changed, or the nib itself may have been re-polished.

F Tier - Poor Condition: This pen is still writable, but it is cosmetically in a terrible state. A major refurbishment has been conducted to restore the pen to an acceptable condition, but in the process, many of its original characteristics have been lost.

Please note that this item condition grade is based on general standards and may vary depending on the specific criteria and expectations of different collectors or sellers.
