Historian I. E. Quastler compiled the history of the 3-footgauge Kansas Central Railway which served the northeast quadrant of theSunflower State. In 1871 at Leavenworth, KS on the banks of the Missouri River,the KC started to build west, another of the many such “slim princesses” constructedin the euphoria associated with building a railroad--with just as slight abudget as the width between the ties. By 1882, the KC reached Miltonvale, 166miles from Leavenworth. With the limitations of a narrow gauge now understood,the KC standard-gauged and ultimately caught theattention of the Union Pacific. USPS Media Mail shipping is $7.00 for the first book and $1.00 for each additional book thereafter.
