As King of Spain, he commands the Governor of the coastal cities of Ronda and Marbella to ensure that no ships depart for Barbary
Manuscript Document Signed: "Yo El Rey" ("I The King") as King of Spain, 1 page, 8¼x11¼. San Lorenzo El Real, 1578 March 22. Countersigned: "by command of his majesty/Juan Delgado". Document is placed in a small frame with a hinge, in front of a plaque with a translation of the message. In Old Spanish, translated. To the Governor of the cities of Ronda and Marbella (addressed on verso). In full: "Our Governor of the cities of Ronda and Marbella; because of many causes convenient to our service, it is convenient that no ships depart for Barbary ("Berberia") without our express command. We command you that in all secrecy and cunning, that in no case they be allowed to leave. You must understand that you have, by our royal order, until you can prove otherwise that it is proper, without declaring beforehand or making any other exception about this. Nevertheless, you must sequester the cargo of whatever ship or ships bound for the Barbary Coast which desire to sail promptly. And before they sail you must give orders that they be detained, and not let them leave, until you advise us and we permit you to let them leave or inform you what you must do." The Barbary Coast was the term used by Europeans until the 19th century for the northern coast of Africa where the Berbers lived, the present-day countries of Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, and Libya. Four years earlier, King Sebastian of Portugal, King Philip\'s nephew, had organized an army in support of a pretender to the Moroccan throne. His first Barbary expedition to fight the Moors in 1574 was little more than reconnaissance. This order was issued during his nephew\'s second expedition to Barbary. On August 4, 1578, the Moroccan King and King Sebastian were killed and the Portuguese army was annihilated at Alcácer Quibir. Although Sebastian\'s body was identified before burial at Al Kasr, reinterred at Ceuta, and then removed by his uncle King Philip II to the Convento dos Jeronymos in Lisbon, many Portuguese refused to believe his death. Sebastianism became a religion. With no heir to the Portuguese throne, King Philip II conquered Portugal (1580-1581). The only son of Emperor Charles V, King of Spain, and Isabella of Portugal, Philip II reigned as King of Spain from 1556-1598. In 1588, he lost naval supremacy when England defeated the Spanish Armada. Remnant of seal and small hole in blank left margin. Light show-through from addressee on verso. Frame lightly chipped around edges. Otherwise, fine condition. Framed in Gallery of History style: 39x24.See more material from these signers:KING PHILIP II (SPAIN) JUAN DEL GADO See more listings in our ROYALTY (410) category.
