The sculptor Justin Mathieu (1796-1864) specialized in reliefs of historical and religious subjects, many shown in the Paris Salons between 1846 and 1864.
Louis IX (25 April 1214 – 25 August 1270), commonly revered as Saint Louis, was King of France from 1226 until his death in 1270. A devout Catholic, Canonized by Pope Boniface VIII in 1297, he is the only French king to be declared a saint.
In 1238, he purchased the Crown of Thorns fromthe Latin emperor of Constantinople, Baldwin II.It was then in the hands of the Venetians as security for a great loan of 13,134 gold pieces, yet it was redeemed and conveyed to Paris where Louis IX built the Sainte-Chapelle, completed in 1248, to receive it. The Crown of Thorns was handed over to Louis IX with great ceremony at the Sens Cathedral in Sens, Burgundy after which it wastransported by boat to Paris for eventual placement in the Sainte-Chapelle.
This work shows St. Louis at Sens with his brother and some courtiers. Clad in simple clothes, the crowned King Louis carries the extraordinary relic atop a chalice.
This plaster bas-relief is framed in a heavy, wooden frame. The white shading around some of the frame details is part of the design.
