John M. Qualen (Casablanca, Black Fury), Typed Letter Signed, Lobby Card:
$150.00

John M. Qualen, typed letter signed (TLS) in black ink, dated Sept. 25th, 1934, on the writer\'s personalized letterhead, to Ann and Leo, about an audition for a part in the film Black Hell, or Black Fury, as the film came to be known. The letter is signed \"John\" most likely with a fountain pen as ballpoint pens had not come into vogue at the time.
Qualen was a Canadian-American character actor born Johan Mandt Kvalen on December 8, 1899, in Vancouver, Canada, of Norwegian heritage who specialized in Scandinavian roles. He appeared in such films as Arrowsmith; The Grapes of Wrath; Knute Rockne, All American; Casablanca; The Searchers; The Big Land; Anatomy of a Murder; and, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance. In total he appeared in over 100 films.
Black Furywas released in 1935 as a social commentary on the antagonistic relationship between coal miners and the mine owners. Paul Muni, who plays an immigrant coal miner turned labor leader named Joe Radek, finds himself in the middle of a bitter labor dispute between the two factions. Muni was nominated for an Oscar for his portrayal of Radek. Qualen played the role of Paul Shemanski. The film was directed by Michael Curtiz, who also directed Casablanca in 1942, in which Qualen played the part of Berger. The film has the distinction of uniting two future Oscar winners, Muni, for the Life of Louis Pasteur (1936) and Curtiz, for Casablanca (1942).
The letter is on 7x10 1/2 cream stationery with Qualen\'s name and address pre-printed in black at top. Creases where the letter has been folded, otherwise, fine. The vintage, glossy b&w lobby card (8x10\") is fine except for four small pin pricks in the corners probably from displaying. Qualen is among the miners standing, looking up at the Paul Muni character, Joe Radek, who is pointing his finger in the air.
The listing is for the letter and lobby card only and does not include the photograph of Qualen.
Due to the recent increase in postal rates, shipping is only to the contiguous 48 states.
