This fine and rare small chest from most likely 19th-century, was a status symbol for special sea captains and members of upper class, such as ship-owners etc. beside being a special storage place for personal effects. They were built to withstand terrible storms and horrible sea conditions. This particular chest has apparently not been repainted or repaired and seems to be in its original state.The original key is missing.
