Mom tells me that when she first arrived in Tokyo (1934), she would take the pin-money (allowance) her parents gave her each month to Sukeroku on Nakamise-dori in Tokyo. There she bought these little stores one at a time until she had over 20 of them. This would have all taken place between 1934 - 1940.
In combination, these original, hand made , antique miniature Japanese shops are known as The Miniature Shops of Edo. They each depict a part of town life as it would have appeared in early Japan.
