Akabeko is a papier-mache doll resembling a red cow. Akabeko is a local toy of the Aizu region, and has been used to ward off evil spirits in children. The red color of the body is believed to have the effect of repelling evil, and the black spots represent pox.

  • During the Tensho period (1615-1626), Ujisato Gamo invited a technician to promote the production of papier-mâché . There are various theories about the origin of akabeko, including the legend of a red cow that drove away a plague that spread during the Heian period and the legend of a red cow that carried materials up a cliff during the reconstruction of Enzoji Temple\'s (Yanaizu Town) Kokuzo Hall, which was damaged by the Aizu Earthquake in the early Edo period (1611) . According to local historian Akio Ishida, in the Aizu region, until the Showa period after World War II, red cows believed to be Korean cattle were called \"Chosun Beko\" and used for cargo handling.
  • According to legend, when smallpox spread in the Aizu region in 1713, people put black spots on the red beko and prayed that their children would not catch the disease, which proved effective. Sales differ between the year of the Ox and other years. The number of workshops that used to have 35 shops has decreased to 4 as of 2021, but the number of people who purchase them to pray for an end to the new coronavirus infection has increased since 2020.
