– Exquisite detail in the etching of this Edo Kikiro Lead-free crystal.- Each sake/tea cup depicts three owls – two small and one large. Also depicting a crescent moon and bamboo trees.– Each cup is 2 3/4” high and 2 1/4” across the tops.– Vintage from 1990, but never used and in perfect condition with no chips or defects.– Bought personally in Japan.– One is Crimson in color and the other deep blue.– In Japanese culture, owls are very significant. The Japanese word for owl is “Fukuro.” The word can be written in different sets of Japanese characters. One can have the meaning of luck to come and the other as protection from hardship. The word itself can be read as meaning “without hardship.”
- Edo Kikiro sake cups are beautiful works of art, but those depicting owls are extremely rare and significant.- Edo Kikiro, meaning cut glassware, is a type of cut glass in which patterns are created by etching the surface of the glass. Its origins date back to the late Edo Period in Japan (1603-1867), when people admired the beauty of glassware brought to Japan from the West and experimented with ways of reproducing it in Japan using traditional Japanese cultural patterns.
