Jackie Coogan THE KID Charlie Chaplin 1921 AZO Postcard 1922 1926 Addams Family Jackie Coogan THE KID Charlie Chaplin 1921 AZO Postcard 1922 1926 Addams Family

Historic Hollywood Postcards from Saturday's Toys presents...  a vintage AZO Real Photo postcard featuring Jackie Coogan as The Kid (1921)

The film was written, directed and produced by screen legend Charlie Chaplin (billed as Charles Chaplin).  In addition, Chaplin also wrote the film's musical score.

The film was distributed by First National (aka Associated First National Pictures).  While Chaplin retained ownership of this film, First National was later purchased by Warner Bros.

Jackie Coogan (1914 - 1984) was widely hailed as the first "child star" of the movies with this popular performance in "The Kid."  The role became so popular with movie audiences that he continued to be cast in similar pictures for several years, even as he grew into adolescence.  More than four decades later, he again found fame as "Uncle Fester" in the 1960's ABC television program, "The Addams Family" (1964 - 1966) with John Astin and Carolyn Jones.

Measures approx. 3.5" x 5.5" (slightly smaller) and was produced by AZO for use in meeting the demand for "real photo postcards" (RPPC) instead of cards that were produced with an offset printing process. This card is a classic example of the high quality that was produced with the creation of true photographic postcards using this new technology.  This particular style of card was only produced by AZO from 1922 thru 1926.  Postcard has never been mailed but was neatly mounted with small dots of adhesive on a black photo album page (since removed).  Some discoloration noted to the reverse side of this postcard during the past 100 years...

The card is rarely seen in today's market. While the "signature" of Jackie Coogan is noted at the lower right corner, we have no information as to whether this was actually the actor's signature, or whether an adult representative may have provided the autograph (as was imprinted within the photo).  The signature was included during the process of manufacturing and is not an in-person signature.  In addition, the number "14" is referenced (possibly indicating card 14 in a series of cards.  Below that is a reference to "A-3" which may be a studio production number from the original photo that was used to create this postcard.  We have noticed that this card maintains more of the original image than others.

The image communicates a depth of emotion that was central to the character of "The Kid"... abandoned by his mother, forgotten and alone... until Chaplin's "Tramp" unexpectedly discovers him in an alleyway, takes him in, and begins to raise the child.  Chaplin personally cast Jackie in the role... for Chaplin's first feature-length film as a director.
