Based on the novel by A.J. Cronin. David O. Selznick bought the book for$100,000 on October 6, 1941; but it was later sold and released by Twentieth Century Fox.
The Chinese Government asked that certain scenes be changed to show a morepositive view of its peoples. The Catholic Church also weighed in on certain scenesin the film involving Catholic clergy and requested changes.Produced by Joseph L. Mankiewicz; directed by John M. Stahl; written by Nunnally Johnsonand Joseph L. Mankiewicz; starring Gregory Peck, Thomas Mitchell, Vincent Price.
