THE JFK WHITE HOUSE 1963

THE CHRISTMAS THAT WASN’T

The White House Wednesday, November 20, 1963.It was one of those legendary Kennedy parties, an evening in Camelot. The occasion was a reception in the East Room for the federal judiciary, including the justices of the Supreme Court of the United States. Although John and Jacqueline Kennedy did not know it, this was also their last night together in the presidential mansion.

Jacqueline Kennedy looked forward to their annual holiday activities. They expected to spend Thanksgiving—November 28—at the Kennedy family compound in Hyannis Port, Massachusetts. Then they planned to spend a family Christmas in Palm Beach, Florida, visiting with the president’s siblings and parents there. But first they would fly to Texas on November 21, for a two-day campaign swing through five cities, including Dallas.

Before they departed, John and Jacqueline Kennedy had already selected and ordered their annual Christmas card: a beautiful Hallmark card, custom made for them, bearing a color photograph of an 18th-century Neapolitan Crèche Nativity that had been displayed in the East Room of the White House each year they had lived there. The inside of the card featured the embossed Seal of the President of the United States.

1500 of these cards were ordered with the message.“With our wishes for a Blessed Christmas and a Happy New Year”printed below the Seal of the President of the United States and also contained the printed signatures of the President and First Lady. The first lady also ordered from Hallmark that year 700 of these cardswithout the facsimile signaturesbearing the message;"With best wishes for a Blessed Christmas and a Happy New Year"plus 100 cards containing their facsimile signatures with the greeting;"With best wishes for a Happy New Year" and an additional 50 cards with the greeting;"With best wishes for a Happy New Year"without signatures.

Including all the above variations, it has been reported that a grand total of approximately 504 were actually delivered by Hallmark to the White House in November 1963.

The Kennedys had signed the first handful of the cards at their leisure. There would be plenty of time to sign the rest of the cards—which they planned to send out to many friends, supporters and heads of state—when they returned from Texas.

The Christmas cards—one of which now resides in the collections of the Smithsonian National Museum of American History…were never mailed.

On November 22,1963 President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in a motorcade in Dallas Texas.

One hour and 39 minutes later after the death of our 35th President, Lyndon Baines Johnson was sworn in as the 36th President of the United States aboard Air Force One.

Upon the new Presidents' arrival at the White House in an effort to speed the transition of his new administration, end the sadness, and heal the nation, President Johnson ordered the destruction of all the Kennedy administration's Christmas cards and ordered the White House Social Entertainment Office to ask Hallmark art director Jeannette Lee to design a new Johnson White House Christmas Card immediately. All of which were mailed in December 1963.
