Original Warren\'s of Boston cabinet photograph of the great poet, Harvard Professor, Minister to The Spanish Court and Ambassador to the Court of St. James under Rutherford B. Hayes.

Mariadied in 1853, and Lowell accepted a professorship of languages at Harvard in1854; he continued to teach there for twenty years. He traveled to Europebefore officially assuming his teaching duties in 1856, and married FrancesDunlap shortly thereafter in 1857. That year, Lowell also became editorofThe Atlantic Monthly. It was not until 20 years later that he receivedhis first political appointment, theambassadorshiptotheKingdom of Spain. He was later appointed ambassador to theCourtof St. James\'s. He spent his last years in Cambridge in the same estate wherehe was born, and died there in 1891.
