James Buchanan signed a party printed document that was later clipped to a 5x6 fragment.
Partly Printed Document Fragment signed: "James Buchanan" as U.S. Minister to Great Britain, 1p, 5x6, front and verso. London, 1854 July 8. Clipped from a partly printed document. In French, not translated, mentioning Abraham Coles. A former U.S. Congressman (1821-1831) and Senator (1834-1845) from Pennsylvania, U.S. Minister to Russia (1832-1833) and Polk\'s Secretary of State (1845-1849), James Buchanan (1791-1868) was named by President Pierce as U.S. Minister to England on April 11, 1853. In the Spring of 1854, his niece, Harriet Lane, joined him in England, returning to the Buchanan home at Wheatland, near Lancaster, Pennsylvania in the Autumn of 1855. Buchanan, whose name had been placed in nomination for President at Democratic National Conventions in 1844, 1848 and 1852, served in his diplomatic post until 1856. His public reception in New York upon his return to the U.S. once again demonstrated an interest in him as a possible presidential candidate. In 1856, Buchanan accomplished a political feat never achieved before or since: denying an incumbent elected President renomination. While the name of President Pierce (to whom Buchanan had lost the 1852 nomination) was placed in nomination at the Democratic Convention, the incumbent President received only 122½ votes on the first ballot, second to Buchanan\'s 135½. On the 17th ballot, Buchanan was unanimously nominated. He easily defeated the newly formed Republican Party\'s nominee, John C. Frémont, and served one term as the 15th U.S. President (1857-1861), proving powerless to heal the growing sectional split over slavery or to prevent the secession of southern states after Lincoln\'s election. Worthy of further research. Heavily creased with folds, light creases at signature. Stamped seal touches "James" and the "Buc" of Buchanan (all legible). Additional stamps on verso, which has tape remnants at right and left margins. ½-inch paper separation at upper horizontal fold on signature side, which also has ¼-inch separation at lower horizontal fold at blank right margin and file hole at upper margin. Chipped at blank left edge. Encapsulated.
