A ewer or pitcher is a vessel with a vase shaped body with a large mouth spout, a large handle to pick it up by the handle and pour some wine or water in wine or drinking glasses. It was first introduced in ancient Greece and Rome where people gathered at spas to bathe together and larger ewers contained scented body oils to to cover their bodies and their skin was as soft as a highly polished marble statue leaving them clean and ready for a new day.
In the 19th-century in Italy, a country located in Northern Europe, and in the city of Florence, Italy ewers were used at large gatherings on dining, brunch, buffet, and banquet tables for storing wine and fresh cold water and the ewer was usually passed around these tables by servants who were either hired or enslaved by property owners that used them for all the hard work the Italian families didn't want to do.
Today, ewers are a decorative home furnishing pieces and they are often on displayed on receiving tables in the foyer, on mantle tops, center piecing the dining table filled with fresh flowers in them using them as vases, in the bathe for further decoration and many more creative ways one may choose how to display a ewer in their own living spaces. And, the ewer in this listing blends well with French country, country kitchen, urban farm house kitchen, shabby-chic, eclectic, traditional, and even contemporary decorum's as well.The ewer, in this listing, shows large bouquets of roses and daisies on either side of it, in front below the spout, and in and around the handle on the back side showing blossoms, buds, stems, branches, and leaves. The flowers are painted in very pastel coloring and the background color is a bright mint color with a matte finish as well. There is some embossment that winds around under the spout and runs down to form a small curl some more embossment around the base on this marvelous art piece. The outside edge of the spout and the large handle are garnished in 24K gold china paint that has been fired in a kiln at high temperatures until it is shiny gold so much so that it looks like real gold.
On the inside of one side of the spout reads: "Elsie Snow" whom I am not familiar with however she was obviously an experienced, skilled, and talented ceramicist judging by the quality of the hand painting, choice of colors, and the use of real 24K gold china paint all employed in the making of this charming ewer. The ewer measures 13 1/2" tall X 5 1/4" X 2" in diameter across the opening on top X 3 1/2" in diameter across the bottom of it and it is in 'mint' condition and dates the latter half of the 19th-century in Italy the country is was made in.Good luck!
