This sale is for a matched pair (diptych) of colorful, Celtic Irish hammered copper plaques with hand enameling, signed \"E O\'Neill.\" Eddie O\'Neill - a renowned Irish artist who worked in copper and other metals from his studio Rathbanna Copperworks, in Derrinraw, Portadown, County Armagh, Northern Ireland. He worked mainly in Celtic inspired pieces from the Book Of Kells, an illuminated manuscript from which these two designs are derived, as well as other Celtic imagery and Crosses. The copper plates are mounted on mahogany-colored wood plaques that measure about 13\" by 7-1/2\". The designs are referred to as deign reference \"A\" and \"C.\"
On the back of each is a label that reads:\"The Irish designs depicted are the typical interwoven zoomorphic figures associated with Celtic manuscripts containing medieval illustrations of natural life. As in Islamic art where reproduction of human and animal forms is forofferden, there was a tendency in Celtic art of employ highly stylished (sic) representations of natural forms and animals which sometimes make the original creature difficult to identify. Fish, birds, reptiles have all frequently appeared as early religious symbols, but invariably, these were in intricate stylised art-form and it is in these forms that they occur in the Book of Kells and other ancient documents.
