RARE EARLY 1920S GILT-BRASS MOUNTED GERMAN PORCELAIN LARGE BOXATTRIBUTED TO FRANZ VON ZULOW
Decorative elements and vivid colors of this entrancing box are unlike anything I've encountered during a four decade career identifying, researching and valuing 19th and 20th century European porcelain. Stylistic anomalies include roundels with cartoon-like images of fish and seagull, as well as the dragonfly in cartouche medallion. These along with the repeated image of tree branches on yellow ground and flowers against a pink ground are outside the vocabulary of (typically conservative) early 20th century German porcelain. A band of small florets in yellow and purple leaf-like devices encircles the box wall. This decoration relates closely to the Vienna Secessionist movement. Franz von Zulow is the most acclaimed of Vienna avant-garde graphic designers experimenting with transfer-decorated porcelain during the early 1920s. Zulow's amazing imagery and color palette working with the Augarten factory are unlike any post-Secessionist artist. Two of his vases are depicted in the final photographs. The bisque bottom of the box perplexingly (and atypically) is unmarked. Nothing to aide in identifying manufacture. Perhaps intentionally - as the box never entered Augarten production? The applied gilt-brass ring foot (stamped Germany) is crisply cast with a beaded rim, molded lip and band of laurel leaves. Delicate openwork decoration encircles the lower wall.
