US NAVAL SURGEON DAVID SHELTON EDWARDS This is the image of USN Surgeon David S. Edwards 1794-1874. He was born in Connecticut, the son of Hezekiah Edwards and Martha Summers. He was a graduate of Yale with the class of 1814. When his military service was over, records show that he was a lawyer. He married Harriet Henry (1808-1890) in Brooklyn, and records show he had two children, William in 1831 and Harriet S in 1833. David Edwards died in Trumbull, CT and is buried there at Long Hill Cemetery. The provenance? Surgeon David Edwards was the close friend of Martin Hoyt (1840-1918), a naval lawyer from Portsmouth, NH who worked with Dr Edwards in Washington, DC. Hoyt lived with his niece in Portsmouth at the end of his life. In 1970 when the niece was in her 90\'s and very alert, she gave me the daguerreotype along with the calling card that had been with it all those years. The niece explained that when David Edwards died in 1874 his daughter Harriet (Edwards) Waller (1834-1881) gave Hoyt the image along with her little calling card with the identification of the photo on the back. She said Uncle Martin Hoyt kept it on his desk with other family photos. All these folks can all be found in online census, vital and genealogical records. The daguerreotype case with photo measures just under 2 1/2 by 3\". The photo with slightly tinted cheeks, the gold foil and the velvet are all in great condition. The case spine is firmly attached but with a crack along the center. The case hook is present and functional. Just a charming little 182 year old identified piece. Please ask any questions. Sorry, no international shipping. Thank you.
