Private Joseph Yantz, of Castalia Iowa, served as private in I Company, 9th Iowa Infantry, and died from wounds at the Battle of Pea ridge, Arkansas, March, 1862. An original Civil War letter from Jo Yantz at Castalia, May 18, 1861 to" Distant but not forgotten Br other" (George Yantz) - We have the G""Dust" weather all rain, John, Levi Gran & I planted 14 rows of corn. They are now shooting,. Well George, they are all well…,--- I have the "damndest cold", sees 11 new graves at the burying ground since last fall, all died in a 3 mile radius of us. Threshing grain will be hard, wishes they had a " Case first premium tip top (threshing) machine". Again, complains of the "damndest weather for colds". Boys are having a great time driillng, they fight 3 times a day,wont be so fun when they get to 'Caro" to fight the Southerners. John K is starting for the War & I will send this letter with him, Tell all the gals to save a kiss for me - I dreamt I was going down to Cairo & saw lots of the girls I new in Caledonia (Racine Co, Wisconsin) and Joe Beck was helping them- I think we are all whipped now for sure. He says the letter is "From J" with a drawing of a funny face, says Jo's eye with a ball on each side looks ready for action", notes that "Mari & Lucus are laughing at my picture" with side note that he is saving all the kisses I can get for you & J". 2pp ink, 8 x 13". Comes w service info. Jo Yantz and Brother Levi came to Castalia from Caledonia, Wis and joined the 9th Iowa .A letter from Brother Levi is posted at the Wisconsin Veteran Museum. Joseph is buried at the National Cemetery, Fayetteville, Arkansas, near Pea Ridge where he was mortally wounded.
