The MANNA (in some countries called MIRRA) of St. Nicholas is the water that is formed in the tomb of the Saint and that was already formed in the Basilica of Mira. For some it is a real miracle and, as in some liturgies it is underlined, it would spring from the bones of the Saint (other liturgies say from the marble of the tomb). It isspecified, however, that the water in the image (prayer card) contained is not the waterthat was formed in the Saint\'s tomb during the year. In fact, normally anaverage quantity of half a liter or more is collected, and therefore on thousandsof devotees could be satisfied only a few. The one that is distributed comesfrom large bottles of holy water, in which the \"manna\" collected on 9May was poured.

THE LEGEND OF SANTA CLAUS

St.Nicholas of Bari, also known as Saint Nicholas of Myra(Patara in Lycia, about270 - Myra, December 6, 343) is venerated as a saint by the Catholic Church,the Orthodox Church and several other Christian denominations. He is well knowneven outside the Christian world because his figure gave rise to the myth ofSanta Claus. Until 1087 his remains were preserved in the cathedral of Myra;then when the city fell under Muslim rule, an expedition of 62 sailors fromBari, among them two priests, Lupo and Grimoldo, with three ships belonging tothe Dottula family, reached Myra and took away the skeleton of Nicholas, who arrivedin Bari on May 9, 1087. According to legend, the relics were deposited wherethe oxen that pulled the wagon stopped, exactly at a Benedictine church in the custody of abbot Elijah, who wouldlater become bishop of Bari. The abbot, however, promoted the building of a newchurch dedicated to the saint (the current Basilica of St. Nicholas), which wasconsecrated two years later by Pope Urban II at the time of the final placementof the relics under the crypt altar. Actually, all modern versions of SantaClaus are derived from the St. Nicholas of Bari, bishop of Myra, who was saidto have found and revived five children kidnapped and killed by an innkeeper,and was therefore considered a protector of children.
