For years, the cult of the so-called“Danubian horseman” draws attention of scholars, who attempt toexplain its essence and affiliation. Opinion of the majority is thatthis is an oriental, solar cult, resting upon a dualistic learningabout the battle of good against evil. The icons were made of lead,stone (marble or limestone) and only a few of them of bronze andpottery.The earliest examples are dated into the first half of the2nd century and include icons made of stone, with images of ahorseman and a goddess. Examples made of lead are dated between themiddle of the 2nd until the middle of the 4th century. This is theperiod of domination of syncretistic cults from the Easternprovinces, accepted and spread throughout the Empire. The mostnumerous finds come from the Danubian provinces, like Dacia, Moesiaand Pannonia

The solar symbolism is shown on all ofthe icons and clearly highlighted in the upper zone, in the positionof the firmament. Usually, in the upper zone, Sol is depicted as acreator of the world, in a quadriga, wearing a crown with rays andcarrying a globe. Sometimes, he is depicted facing the goddess Luna.The creator of the world can be replaced with other symbols, solar(stars, the Moon) or zoomorphic (snake, eagle). In the corners, thereare always busts of Sol and Luna, aiming to indicate the astralcharacter. In the second zone, the central position is taken by agoddess flanked with horsemen. This triad is the only one that has anunchanged, permanent position within the iconographic interpretationof all of the examples known so far. It makes the basis of the cult.

The origin and affiliation of the cultof the “Danubian horseman” clearly corresponds to the solartheology. The most widely spread ancient solar cult was Mithraism.The supreme deity, Sol, had his delegate on Earth ‒ Mi Circularperforations (one or two) on certain icons indicate that they werehung. It is not known exactly how they were placed or worn. We canpresume that they hung on walls of temples, in private homes ofbelievers or in private chapels. There is also a presumption thatthey were worn as necklaces, especially the smaller examples andthose of circular shape (medallions). The dedicated mystics probablyleft them in temples as votive gifts, as signs of gratitude orprobably as signs of their dedication to the cult. The same shapesand iconographical images were noted with several examples,confirming the theory of serial production intended for numerous“users”, actu ally cult followers. If one compares icons made ofstone with those made of lead, almost equal in numbers, thenregarding small dimensions, lightness and schematized production, onecan presume that the lead ones were intended for individualbelievers, while the stone ones represented parts of private orpublic sanctuaries. So far, no sanctuary dedicated to the “Danubianhorseman” was discovered, but on the other hand, icon finds areknown, mostly made of stone, either close or within sanctuariesdedicated to Mitra .
