“FABERGE” By: Karen Farrington Peter Carl Faberge was a Russian goldsmith and jeweler, Whose designs were so imaginatively conceived and opulently executed that his Work elevated jewellery as a decorative art to a level unequaled since the Renaissance. Born in Saint Petersburg and educated in Western Europe, he took control of the family jewellery business in 1870 and rapidly gained a reputation as a designer. He worked with precious and semiprecious stones and metals, and drew on many styles, including Old Russian, Greek, Renaissance, Baroque, Art Nouveau, naturalism, and caricature. Above all else, Faberge was incredibly meticulous when it came to quality workmanship. It is reported that he would bring a hammer down and destroy an object if it did not meet his approval. At its peak his firm had branches in Moscow, Odessa, Kiev, London, and Saint Petersburg and employed some 700 people to produce its jewelled flower baskets, gold-and—enamel Easter eggs, miniature animals, chalices, bonbonnieres, and numerous other lavish objects until the Russian Revolution ended his business in 1918. The artistry and skill of Faberge is apparent in all of his works. Among his more popular pieces are stone-carved animals, flowers that never die, beautiful clocks, creative drinking vessels, exquisite snuff boxes and cigarette cases, unique parasol and walking cane handles, and frames that more than rival the pictures they hold. But above all are the treasured Faberge Easter eggs that have become his signature works.
Illustrated with superb photography of many Faberge works of art that have passed through the hands of Christie’s, the world renowned sale house, this book is a comprehensive and beautiful account of the life and work of one of the most important artists of his time. The book is a hardcover, with a dustjacket, and is larger format, measuring about 12 x 12 inches. It is 144 pages long, and just packed with photographs and illustrations. It was published in London, England, in 1999. The book is used, but is in very good condition. Some minor tears on the dustjacket, but no writing, no stains or soiling, clean cover & tight binding. The top buyer should add $19.99 for postage in North America. I have other, similar books up for sale now, so please check them out too! Multiple books always combined to save on postage, & full refund if you’re not happy. Thanks for looking!
