In his signed handwritten letter dated Nov 12, 1883 to famous portrait artist Oliver Lay renowned Hudson River School artist Worthington Whittredge (Thomas Worthington Whittredge 1820-1910) writes of the need for Lay to attend a meeting of the Committee on Admissions of the A.F.S. at his studio (of which Whittredge was Chairman).In his letter, Whittredge refers to three candidates – all fellow acclaimed landscape / seascape artists of the Hudson River School – (Hugh) Bolton Jones, Harry Chase and F.K.M. Rehn (Frank Knox Morton Rehn). Written on two-sides of 5 X 8 stationery, Whittredge signs verso, “Very truly yours W. Whittredge, Chairman.”Whittredge was widely associated with many leading Hudson River School artists including Albert Bierstadt and Sanford Robinson Gifford. Besides his Chairmanship referred to in this letter, Whittredge served as President of the National Academy of Design, and was a member of the selection committees for two most prestigious artist venues, the 1876 Philadelphia Centennial Exposition and the 1878 Paris Exposition.Oliver Ingraham Lay to whom Whittredge writes was a famous portrait artist, (whose famous paintings include the painting of stage actor Edwin Booth (brother of Abraham Lincoln assassin John Wilkes Booth) in Edwin’s renowned role as Hamlet).Very good condition.
