St. Donndus. German Catholic Folk Art. Early 19th C Reverse Oil Painting on Glass.
Provenance: from the York, PA estate sale of a collector of German folk art. Likeness to St. Martin\'s church (and German script lettering) supports its German origins, with the naive style of the early-to-mid 19th century. St. Donndus (Latin name, St. Donatus) is a catacomb saint whose relics are found in the Jesuit church in Bad Muenstereifel, Germany. He is widely venerated in the Rhine valley region of Germany and the Low Countries as patron saint and protector against lightning strikes. The Archdiocese of Cologne sponsors an annual pilgrimage to Bad Muenstereifel on the 2nd Sunday of July. The painting depicts the Saint in a rainstorm with dark clouds and lightning bolts, pointing at a likeness of St Martin\'s Church in Euskirchen, Germany. The artist is paying homage to an event recorded on 30 June, 1652, when a Jesuit priest, Fr. Heerde, was saying morning mass at that church. With the conclusion of benediction, lightning struck and lit the altar and the priest on fire. He immediately invoked the aid of Saint Donndus and was miraculously restored unharmed.
