The F-4 Phantom ll first entered military service in 1960. It was designed as a fleet defense fighter for the United States Navy, but by 1965, it was adopted as the United States Air Force as it's primary fighter-bomber. Despite the size and weight of this cold war icon, the F-4 broke 15 world records and continued to hold five of them until 1975. Produced from 1960 to 1981, there were 5,195 Phantom ll's manufactured. Eleven countries other than the USA, had the Phantom ll in their inventory.
The F-4D Phantom ll variant was one of the most numerously produced models with 825 manufactured. The "D" model was an F-4C with updated avionics and updated radar. The "D" model had its first flight in June of 1965.
This aircraft (serial number 66-7733) was an F-4D-31-MC. It was assigned to the United States Air Force (USAF) 480th Tactical Fighter Squadron (TFS) of the 37th Tactical Fighter Wing (TFW). The squadron was based at Phu Cat Air Base in the Republic of Vietnam in 1969. The 480th was originally assigned to Da Nang Air Base flying F-4C's, but when they began flying F-4D's, they moved to Phu Cat on 15 April 1969.
