Huntington, known as the “Lime City”, is thelargest city in and the county seat of Huntington County, Indiana.The Countywas formally organized in 1834 and thecity of Huntington was first established by a group of pioneers, most notably Capt.Elias Murray. By 1849, Huntingtoncontained 150 houses and a population of 700. The “Wabash and Erie Canal”was constructed through the county in 1834 and added major an economic benefit tothe area. In addition to the WabashRiver cutting through Huntington, this newly opened trade routeaccelerated the population and economic growth.

Huntington County has arich history of agriculture. Earlysettlers came with only primitive tools, felled trees with axes and hauled themaway by teams of animals. Once the landwas cleared, it was time to employ primitive wooden plows which would oftenbreak in the hard soil. By the mid-19thcentury, the industrial revolution brought steel plows and machines for reapingand threshing which allowed farmers to move beyond subsistence level farming. Now,Indiana is the eighth largest farming state in the nation, with morethan 56,649 farming operations and an average farm size of 264 acres. The state’s agricultural industry contributesan estimated 35.1 billion to Indiana’s economy.
