Our vase is a reproduction of an Attic Red Figure (White Ground) Calyx Krater Attributed to the Phiale Painter (440 - 435 B.C.) which is now exhibited in the Gregorian Etruscan Museum, Vatican City.

Side A: Hermes delivers theinfant Dionysus to the foster care of Silenus and the Nysiad Nymphs. The old,white-haired Silen is seated on a rock draped with a leopard-skin. He has theears and tail of an ass and holds a thyrsos (pine-cone tipped staff). Theseated Nysiad holds a flowering plant.

Side B: Three Muses arerepresented -one seated on a rock in the act of playing the barbiton, the otherat the sides, one of whom has a lyre - in accordance with the predilection forthe world of theatre, music and dance regularly expressed by the painter. It isbelieved that the main theme in reality describes a theatrical representation,possibly from a lost drama by sophocles.
