October18, 1917 Letter by Herbert Hoover, Signed

Up for offer is an interestingtyped letter (original) written by and hand signed by Herbert Hoover (1874-1964),and dated October 18, 1917. This letter waswritten on United States Food Administration letterhead, reflecting Hoover’sposition at that time. He was appointedby Pres. Wilson to be the director of the Food Administration (reflectingHoover’s prior focus on helping to meet food needs during the earlier years ofWorld War I), serving in that position August 1917 – November 1918 (beforeleading the American Relief Administration after the war, helping to feed thestarving ones in Europe).

This letter is one that was sentto a number of people in positions of contact in the agricultural community, encouraging increased animal production, “particularly hogs” (he stated),to meet the increased food needs during the war. This letter reflects the strong emphasis hehad during the 1914-1920 period. Afterhis unsuccessful run for the presidency in 1920, Hoover served as a leadCabinet member under both Presidents Harding and Coolidge. He was elected in 1928 to serve as the 31stPresident of the United States (1929-1933).While he has been at times maligned because of the Great Depression, ithas been recognized that he did many very useful things through his years ofservice, commonly focused on agriculture and meeting food needs. Following World War II, he also served inpositions under Presidents Truman and Eisenhower. This letter, in his first official governmentalposition, reflects a lead service area of his 50 years of service.

This letter is an important letterby Herbert Hoover, who became an important political and social leader duringthe later 1910s – 1950s, including as Chair of the Hoover Commission underTruman. I don\'t see any staining ortears to this letter; it is in very nice shape. The paper does have a BLANDFORD BOND watermark. It was folded for mailing, but has beenunfolded for years.

The letter is a little smaller than a standard one, measuring 8 inches by 10 1/2 inches.

Buyer pays First Class largeenvelope postage, which is noted (and not expensive). If you would prefer another method ofshipment, please select it at the time of purchase. This letter will be shipped (unfolded, incardstock) promptly with payment. Pleaseemail me with any questions you may have.
