Henry Miller Autograph Letter Signed 5/12/79 to me, Elliot Ephraim, personally at Elliott's (sic) Books, Northford, Conn.
With an interesting comment about Brassai. Brassaï was a Hungarian–French photographer, sculptor, medalist, writer, and filmmaker who rose to international fame in France in the 20th century.
In the mailing envelope with the return address of 444 Ocampo Drive, Pacific Palisades, California.
Text as follows:
"Dear Friend, Yes, that's a beauty, that Cuore. Strange, I've been getting 4 or 5 good ones from all over. I hope you sent bill. My sec'y opened package. I will try to find a couple of old photos-not sure if I have any. Yes, Brassai took a famous one-but I don't have any of them. I am on the outs with him after **2** books he wrote about me. Thank you-need no more books at moment. Henry Miller"
Printed text at bottom of his stationery: "IT IS MORE PROFITABLE TO THE SOUL TO FUNCTION IN THE MIDST OF DISORDER THAN TO TRY TO CREATE ORDER."
Note: Henry Miller discovered my antiquarian bookshop, Elliot's Books, when he was interested in obtaining an out of print book written in French by Pierre Loti about a harem. I happened to have that very book in stock and sent it to him without an invoice, asking him for a photo of himself in exchange. This letter was his reply. At age 91, I am ready to pass it on to a Miller enthusiast.
