Samuel Alexander Cohner was born in the US although his parents were Austrian. After living in Paris he moved to Havana, a city that always interested him because of its traditional welcome to photographers and its fondness for the art of Daguerre. He became acquainted with the German painter Oscar Held, who had his studio at 89 Calle del Obispo, and there they opened a portrait gallery, \"Carte de Visite\", which was an unexpected success. The following year Cohner teamed up with the American photographers Winter and Charles D. Fredricks and portrayed the main figures in this new format, offering albums to collect them. The Havana Gazette of 1 July 1860 advertised the sale of portraits of this size of the Count of San Antonio, General Concha, the Illustrious City Council, Mrs Gertrudis Gómez de Avellaneda, the Señoritas Inés and Fanny Nataly, Madame Garnier, etc. In 1862, Cohner decided to become independent. He closed the Washington gallery and travelled to Paris where he opened a photography shop at 59 Rue Rivoli and then returned to Havana in November 1862 \"at the head of a company of eminent artists in painting and photography\" with French photographers, dressmakers, retouchers, painters and workers, and opened at 62 Rue d\'O\'Reilly (now 364 Rue d\'O\'Reilly). 62 (now 364), the \"S.A. Cohner Photographic Gallery\", the most luxurious and modern in the capital, with spacious rooms, the latest equipment for portraits and the most modern photographic techniques in vogue in Europe and America. Among the photographers of O\'Reilly Street, Cohner stands out for the elegance of his portraits, especially of women. This first gallery was followed by new establishments, which were in the hands of German, Spanish, American, French and Cuban photographers. The supremacy reached such a point that in 1874 there were 15 photographic studios in Havana, eight of which were located in O\'Reilly.
