Harold DeJan Olympia Brass Band Glen Campbell New Orleans Jazz ? Mardi Gras 1974:
$23.40

Up for sale is a very cool vintage photo related to the musical culture of New Orleans, Louisiana. It features three person of whom I have identified two: band leader Harold DeJan (on the left) and singer Glen Campbell (on the right). Do you know who the man in the middle is? Please send me your ideas. (Thanks.)
As a youth, Harold DeJan (1909 - 2002), a New Orleans native, was a saxophonist for the Olympia Serenaders and the Holy Ghost Brass Band. He performed in Storyville, at Mahogany Hall, and on Mississippi riverboats. Starting in 1951, he played a critical role in reviving the New Orleans brass band tradition by forming Dejan\'s Olympia Brass Band. Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, Olympia was considered the top band of its kind in New Orleans. It regularly appeared at Preservation Hall and went on multiple national and on European and African tours. One of its most memorable appearances was in the opening scene of the 1973 James Bond movieLive and Let Die, when the band conveniently pauses so that coffin bearers can collect the body of an assassination victim. In the photo I am selling, DeJan is wearing the band hat and playing the saxophone. On his coat is a label reading \"Travel South USA\". According to the book New Orleans on Parade, by J. Mark Souther, \"Travel South USA\" was a major sponsor of the Olympia Brass Band, starting in the late 1960s.
Glen Campbell (1936 - 2017) is, of course, most is best remembered as a country superstar. However, he had close ties to jazz and to New Orleans. One of his earliest idols was the gypsy jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt (with whom he would later record). During the 1974 Mardi Gras, he was honored as the King of the Krewe of Bacchus, leading the 22 float parade through Mid City and to Gallier Hall, where he thrilled the revelers by singing \"Way Down Yonder in New Orleans\". In the photo I am selling, Campbell is wearing a necklace that appears to be a chain of doubloons. (It\'s possible that this photo was taken during the 1974 Mardi Gras, but I have no way to positively establish this.) In 1977, Campbell recorded a version of Southern Nights, composed by New Orleans jazz great Allen Toussaint. The song became a mega hit, reaching No. 1 on Billboard\'s \"hot country\", the \"hot 100\", and the \"hot adult contemporary\" charts. The photo itself measures about 9.375 inches wide by about 6.75 inches tall. It is in black and white with a matte (non-glossy) finish. The photo is attached to a matt that measures just under 14 inches wide by just under 11 inches tall. (It would fit into any 11 x 14 inch frame.)Provenance: I obtained this photo from a Metairie, Louisiana estate. There is no indication of the photographer, the date of the photo, or the occasion. I believe this to be a one of a kind (OOAK) photograph. There is no negative.
Please see above for full description of condition and for photos. Sold as is.
