Artist Bio:

Catherine (Kate) Greenaway(17 March 1846– 6 November 1901) was an EnglishVictorianartist and writer, known for herchildren\'s bookillustrations. She received her education in graphic design and art between 1858 and 1871 from the Finsbury School of Art, theSouth Kensington School of Art, the Heatherley School of Art and theSlade School of Fine Art. She began her career designing for the burgeoning holiday card market, producing Christmas and Valentine\'s cards. In 1879 wood-block engraver and printer,Edmund Evans, printedUnder the Window, an instant best-seller, which established her reputation. Her collaboration with Evans continued throughout the 1880s and 1890s.

Greenaway\'s childhood was not filled with wealth, but her imagination made it fun for her. Her mother owned a dress shop, and Kate would watch her father work on engravings for books and newspapers. Her childhood experiences continued to be her biggest inspiration during her career. Throughout her schooling, she became increasingly frustrated at the segregation between men and women in the schools, because she was missing out on important lessons that would help her develop as an artist. Between that and a struggle to focus, she attended 4 different schools.

The depictions of children in imaginary 18th-century costumes in a Queen Anne style were extremely popular in England and internationally, sparking the Kate Greenaway style. Within a few years of the publication ofUnder the WindowGreenaway\'s work was imitated in England, Germany and the United States.

Greenaway died of breast cancer in 1901, at the age of 55.She is buried inHampstead Cemetery, London.
