Rickover signed this typed letter regarding Muhammad Ali on Atomic Energy Commission letterhead to Harold Hayes, editor of Esquire, in 1969. With original mailing envelope.
Typed letter signed "H.G. Rickover", 1 page, 7x8, on Atomic Energy Commission letterhead. July 29, 1969. Addressed to Harold Hayes, Editor of Esquire Magazine, New York. In full: "Dear Mr. Hayes: I regret that I am in not a position to comply with your request of July 25, 1969. I do not have sufficient knowledge of the facts in connection with the Muhammad Ali matter, and therefore am in no position to either agree or disagree with Mr. Shaw's statement. Sincerely, H. G. Rickover". Lightly toned and creased. Signature is damp stained. Staple holes at upper left corner. Otherwise in fine condition. Accompanied by: Original mailing envelope on Atomic Energy Commission stationery. No postmark. Addressed to Harold Hayes, Editor of Esquire Magazine, New York. Lightly toned and creased. Torn open at top edge. Otherwise in fine condition. The cover story of the November 1969 issue of Esquire was Muhammad Ali Deserves the Right to Defend His Title, and related article included statements by Truman Capote, Howard Cosell, James Earl Jones, Roy Lichtenstein, Sidney Lumet, George Plimpton, Richard Benjamin, Theodore Bikel and 90 others. In 1967, MUHAMMAD ALI, citing his religious beliefs, had refused induction into the U.S. Army. Convicted of violating the Selective Service Act, Ali was barred from the ring and stripped of his title. In 1971, the conviction was reversed by the U.S. Supreme Court. Head of the United States Navy's electrical division in World War II, HYMAN G. RICKOVER (1900-1986, born in Makov, Russia) moved to the Atomic Energy Commission in 1947 and developed the first nuclear-powered submarine, the Nautilus, in 1954. He presided over the build-up of the U.S. nuclear-powered Navy. He also presided over the construction of the one-of a kind, super-secret NR-1 nuclear submarine. Despite cost overruns during its development, which earned the wrath of the General Accounting Office, the NR-1 fulfilled Rickover's fondest hopes. The story of the craft has now been told in Dark Waters: An Insider's Account of the NR-1, the Cold War's Undercover Nuclear Submarine by Don Davis and original crewmember Lee Vyborny (2002). Rickover was promoted to rear admiral in 1953, vice-admiral in 1959 and admiral in 1973.See more material from these signers:ADMIRAL HYMAN G.
