A History of Texas Railroads, by Reed, Pub by St Clair, 1941 2nd edition, 822 pages, about 6 1/2 x 9 1/2. Hardcovers.
"One of the most comprehensive studies of the railroading history of any state, this is by far the best on Texas railroads. - Reed began working for the New York, Texas and Mexican Railway (Southern Pacific Railroad) in 1888, retiring in 1937."
"The complete history of Texas Railroads until 1940. A great reference to find details on the original railroads. Outstanding book that took many years of research.""This massive treatise on the history of railroads in Texas is considered "[One of the most comprehensive studies of the railroading history of any state, and by far the best on Texas railroads. The author reveals comprehensive knowledge of the problems of federal and state legislation regulating rail transportation and a sympathetic understanding of social, economic, and political conditions back of such legislation." Jenkins, BTB 169.
The book begins with an examination of the transportation issues in the earliest days under Spain and Mexico and proceeds through the development of the railroad industry, state and federal regulation before and after the Civil War, land grants, the history of named lines (both large and small), types of lines (logging, belt, electric street railways, etc.), taxation, mileage by year and class, commodities carried and a host of other topics. Includes list of all railroads chartered in Texas since the Civil War.
"Provides a great history of Texas railroads in general, and covers all of the major lines operating within the state in particular, each company covered in its own chapter.
Covers show wear at spine & edges. Contents are in decent condition. Binding tight.
A rare book - the last original copy listed on was sold back in Jan for $129 and it was in much worse condition that this copy (actually the cover was off the contents).
