Signature of the second Episcopal bishop of Illinois on a printed autograph card. Extremely rare!
Printed card signed in ink: "Henry J. Whitehouse/Bishop of Illinois/Chicago/April 12th 1869", in brown ink, 5x2¾ autograph card. Henry John Whitehouse (1803-1874) was the second Episcopal bishop of Illinois. Ordained priest in 1827, he served as rector of Christ Church in Reading, Pennsylvania, St. Luke's Church in Rochester, New York and St. Thomas Church in New York City. He was elected coadjutor Bishop of Illinois in 1851. Upon the death of Bishop Philander Chase, Whitehouse became bishop but refused to take up his seat for 9 years until his salary demands were met. The diocesan convention charged him with dereliction of duty and he was condemned. Blind embossed stamp at left edge. Slightly toned and creased. Shipping - We ship via FedEx and USPS. Shipping charges are calculated at time of payment and are dependent on the number of items purchased and the destination shipping address.
