WONDERFUL, eXCEPTIONALLY LARGE -- WILLIAM HENRY HARRISON / JOHN TYLER 1840 "HARD CIDER" / "lOG CABIN' PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN BROADSIDE
WE ARE PLEASED TO OFFER: A vintage woodcut broadside, that is printed from the original 1840 block used in the 1840 Harrison / Tyler Presidential campaign. Over all size is approximately 12 x 22 inches, and it is framed in a gilt-wood and black frame to a 15 x 25 inch size. There is insect damage as seen in the imagery, yet this is a remarkable survivor, that we are guessing was produced in the mid-19th century. A statement under the block print states: "Printed from the Original Wood Cut, Engraved in 1840 for...[?]LLIOTT, Printer, by JOHN SPENCE, 117 South Second St. Philadelphia, Pa., connected con[tinu]ally with the house since that time". An old label on the verso states: "19th C. Printing from Original 1840 Woodcut / Henry Harrison & Tyler Campaign Emblem / used for use on broadsides/banners during Whig's "Log Cabin", "Hard Cider" 1840 Campaign. Interesting extra info at bottom. No other examples known of this Spence Printing". To which we concur, having dealt in historic Americana for nearly 45 years, this is the first time we have encountered this specific print.
The Library of Congress has an original, but their information states the author as "unknown". The appearance of this broadside helps establish authorship!
