Greenfield Tool wood smoothing plane w/ Whiting iron & showy nameplate G Hopkins:

You are offerding on one interesting Greenfield Tool Company wood smoothing plane as pictured.

It is marked "GREENFIELD TOOL CO GREENFIELD MASS" on the front end, and unmarked on the back end.

The body of the plane is about 8-15/16" in length. It has the dark wood strike button on the top front as can be seen.

The wedge has a most unusual metal owner's name plate that is marked "GEO HOPKINS CONWAY MASS" with an eagle logo. The name plate is oval, with one screw through it and one nail holding the opposite edge. It measures about 1-3/8" wide by about a 32nd over 3/4" tall. I can't tell you anything about Hopkins, other than he really liked this plane!

The iron is marked "A L WHITING & CO WORCESTER, MASS" with his usual plane logo. It measures about 1-3/4" in width, and is about a 32nd over 7" in length. It is tapered, about .145" thick near the sharp edge, and about .095" thick near the upper end.

The Greenfield Tool Company was a prolific plane maker, and made planes in Greenfield, Massachusetts, from 1851 to 1883. Please see the book American Wooden Planes 5th Edition for more information about them.

Alonzo L Whiting made plane irons around 1870 in Worcester, Massachusetts. Please see Roger Smith's book Patented Transitional and Metallic Planes in American Volume One page 155 for more information about Whiting, and it notes that his irons turn up in a variety of planes.

Condition of the plane body and wedge is good, with a variety of stains and a few scratches and dings in the wood including some dings in the top of the wedge. The two little "wings" that hold the wedge are starting to crack, especially the right side. There are some scratches in the sole, and a tight check extending back from about the middle of the throat.

The iron has some patina (color) but almost no pitting, and the upper end has been ground down, presumably because it was peened over.

USPS POSTAGE RATE INCREASES: I use the Post Office for everything, and yes, the shipping charges just keep going up and up. The Post Office now has several prices increases during each year, raising a few things but not everything at each increase. And they now raise their rates during the Holidays, which means early October to late January. Their big increases are in January, timed to start at the end of the Holiday rates, and this year is no exception. And it's not just the postage rates, the insurance charges and the delivery signature charges have also gone up. There is now a surcharge for Priority Mail packages over 20" long, and another for Priority Mail packages over 30" long, because those longer packages won't fit in their automatic machines. And the Post Office has discontinued the Regional Flat Rate boxes, which were often less expensive for certain sizes and weights.I try to pick the best shipping option for each listing, based both on what is the least expensive and on what I think is needed to protect the item. If the value is $250 or over, requires your signature at delivery for the buyer and seller protections to be in effect.

SALES TAX: Interstate sales tax is now the reality on all the major selling websites including . If I ship to a state where is required to collect sales tax, will charge you the sales tax for your location.There is lots of information available from that explains it in much more detail.
