In 1970 she was also Minister of the Interior. She continued her policy of reorienting Israel's foreign policy toward the United States and sought the possibility of direct peace negotiations with Arab countries, while at the same time rejecting demands for preliminary territorial concessions. In 1973, on the fast day of Yom Kippur, Egyptian and Syrian troops attacked Israel; In the ensuing war, Israel managed to avoid defeat[⇨], but Meir's government's unpreparedness for an invasion led to her resignation in the spring of 1974. At the end of her political career, she released her autobiography, which became a bestseller, and was awarded the State Prize of Israel (1975)[⇨].
