Godzilla is a fictional monster, or kaiju, originating from a series of Japanese films. The character first appeared in the 1954 film Godzilla and became a worldwide pop culture icon, appearing in various media, including 32 films produced by Toho, four Hollywood films and numerous video games, novels, comic books and television shows. Godzilla has been dubbed the \"King of the Monsters\", a phrase first used in Godzilla, King of the Monsters! (1956), the Americanized version of the original film.

And now, IDW Publishing presents “Godzilla: Monsters and Protectors”. When a coldly single-minded businessman uses an untested element to create clean energy for a profit, he inadvertently awakens the beast from the deep - Godzilla! Sensing the harm the new energy poses to the planet, Godzilla attacks the heart of the problem - humankind! It will be up to three intrepid middle-school students - with a little magic help from Infant Island - to show Godzilla that not all humans are bad... and that there is still hope for Planet Earth.

Story (Spoilers!)

In issue #1A,Streaminglive onMeToob, eighth grader Cedric Nishimura tells the story of how he \"saved the world from Godzilla.\" An eighth grader attending an American junior high school in Tokyo, he sat at attention as his teacher Mr. Murray made the class watch aLinivalCorporation press conference. His friends Emily Hill and Anderson Scott were less engaged.LinivalCEO Nomura explained that the element his company discovered last year, which he simply calls E-131, allowed them to develop a revolutionary clean energy source. Their first plant operated onLinivalIsland, an artificial island floating in the Pacific Ocean, transmitting energy through electromagnetic radiation. He assured the reporters assembled below that the transmission would have minimal impact on the environment, due to an unspecified \"proprietary technology.\" With the press of a button, he begins the first transmission. As Cedric explains in the present, the massive amounts of electromagnetic radiation released byLinivalIsland was harmful to krill. Godzilla soon emerged from the ocean\'s depths and laid waste to the island with his atomic breath. The press conference descended into chaos; Nomura vanished.

Godzilla\'s attack marked his first appearance in decades, before even Cedric\'s parents were born. He invokes a documentary his Uncle Ken gave him on DVD, which theorized that Godzilla functioned as the planet\'s immune system, dispatching large-scale threats likeKumonga. It also questioned humanity\'s fate if Godzilla ever deemed them a threat. In the months that followed, Godzilla attackedLinivalenergy plants around the globe. Cedric thought he was striking a blow for the environment, while his dad believed Godzilla was being controlled by aliens. Cedric discussed theories with his friends and how Godzilla could be stopped while playing a card game called Kaiju Crush. He ends the livestream by teasing that someone did know why Godzilla was attacking: twosomeones, standing atop a giant egg on the shore of a remote island.

Next in issue #2A,Inhis second vlog, Cedric Nishimura addresses how he could have known thatLinivalIsland\'s energy transmissions affected krill: theShobijintold him. Tiny telepaths who live on Infant Island with their monster goddess Mothra, theShobijinreceive a vision one day of Godzilla\'s growing anger. Humanity\'s devastation of the planet is such that he is contemplating using his atomic breath in Japan to cause an explosion massive enough to block out the sun, ushering in a new Ice Age. Uncertain whether humanity deserves Mothra\'s help, they meditate to arrive at the answer. AtLinivalheadquarters, Nomura orders Godzilla destroyed. From cell samples onLinivalIsland, his scientists have determined that Godzilla cannot be poisoned. One scientist suggests building a giant robot, but geneticist Takahashi dismisses it as impractical. His own team has made great progress already.

TheShobijindecide they should convince Godzilla that humanity can change. Their first destination will be a school in Japan, as \"the next generation is where hope grows best.\" TheShobijinwith a blue hair clip summons a bird to fly them there. Meanwhile, Godzilla\'s attacks continue, prompting Cedric\'s school to dedicate a day to discussing the monster. Emily and Anderson dominate the conversation at first, with Emily believing Godzilla\'s goal is to restore balance and Anderson asserting that he\'s only acting on dumb instinct. Cedric opines that either option is terrifying. Mr. Murray notes that humanity can either change or keep the status quo, as Godzilla\'s targets suggest that he is responding specifically to us. A change could either intensity his attacks or end them. In the ruins ofLinivalIsland, Takahashi leads Nomura to an underground facility where his team has been attempting to clone Godzilla. The first attempt was a failure; the second used Element 131 in an attempt to power its atomic breath. He shows a delighted Nomura the third and most promising clone, which incorporates plant and mammalian DNA as well. It resembles a giant rosebud.

Concluding his vlog, Cedric quips, \"Making another monster was probably not the kind of change Mr. Murray was talking about, but it certainly was a choice, right?\" An unseen viewer clicks on the next video.

Next in issue #3A,Cedric begins his third vlog by reminding his viewers that theShobijinare not fairies - if they were, they would have wings.

After a wild flight, theShobijinland in the Tokyo school from their vision. They begin to psychically examine the students in the hopes of finding one with hope for the future with little success, but are heartened by the appearance of twins, Ann and Steph, who they call over. At lunch, Emily and Anderson share with Cedric their ideas for an essay Mr. Murray assigned them about what the future could look like. Emily envisions cities covered in vegetation and electric cars powered by solar-panel roads, while Anderson favors domed cities that could endure any environment and even kaiju attacks. Cedric, on the other hand, can only think of touchable holograms. Ann and Steph interrupt them as theShobijinlook into their hearts.

Meanwhile, Nomura reveals the existence ofBiollantetoLinival\'sboard of directors, whose effectiveness as a Godzilla deterrent will allow them to resurrect the E-131 energy program. Ann and Steph try to explain theShobijin\'smission to Emily, Anderson, and Cedric, but only give them the impression that they have rich fantasy lives. Just then, the Godzilla begins streaming the monster\'s second attack onLinivalIsland.Biollanteambushes him with tendrils as soon as he comes ashore. The regenerating vines quickly overpower him.Biollantepicks him up, spits two globs of acid onto his face, and throws him back into the sea. The stream concludes with Nomura boasting aboutBiollante\'ssupremacy. Anderson hails it as a victory for science, while Emily sees the fight as a primal battle for territory. She tries to solicit the twins\' opinions, but finds they have vanished. Cedric concludes his vlog by foreshadowing a rematch between Godzilla andBiollante.

Next in issue #4A,Introducinghis fourth vlog, Cedric addresses complains that he spoiled Godzilla\'s rematch withBiollante, and realizes in the middle of his explanation that the media never reported on it.

With theShobijinmind-controlling Nomura\'s secretary Ito, Steph and Ann gain access to his office. They try to warn him that Godzilla will return to defend Earth\'s wildlife fromLinival\'spower plants, but he brushes them off. On the bus ride back to school, theShobijinexplain that their abilities didn\'t work on him because he is so convinced of the righteousness of his actions. While sitting on the sidelines during gym class, Cedric, Emily, and Anderson realize they\'ve all been having the same dream about Godzilla destroying the Earth by firing his atomic breath into its core. Steph and Ann arrive and explain that their dreams are an unintended side effect of theShobijinlooking into their hearts. The priestesses reveal themselves and offer thetwinsfarewell. They offer the trio a chance to save the world from Godzilla with Mothra\'s help and the strength of their beliefs.

Godzilla makes landfall in Chiba Prefecture while the Shobijin prepares to call Mothra. Linival sends Biollante to battle him once more, but he dominates the fight. With tremendous effort, he manages to hurl her into the air, then torch her with his atomic breath. Closing out his vlog, Cedric points his viewers towards amateur footage of the rematch and teases his own confrontation with Godzilla.

Finally in issue #5A,Informing Cedric, Emily, and Anderson that they have little time, theShobijincall Mothra, who flies by a passenger jet on her way from Infant Island. Takahashi calls Nomura to inform him thatBiollanteis still alive. She engages Godzilla again, spitting acid at his back. Meanwhile, Mothra arrives at the school. TheShobijininvite the kids to ride her to face Godzilla, while also mind-controlling a general to ensure the JSDF stands down.

Godzilla finally destroysBiollante, crushing her with a charged, flying stomp. As he prepares a planet-killing blast of atomic breath, Mothra arrives on the scene. TheShobijinlink the kids\' minds with Godzilla\'s, showing him their hope for the future. He relents, agreeing to give humanity one more generation to change their destructive ways. Concluding his vlog, Cedric likens Godzilla to a building-sized Santa Claus watching over the human race and prepared to pass judgment. TheShobijinand Mothra return to their island, while Godzilla sinks into the depths of the Pacific Ocean.

Nomura, having finished the vlog series, concludes that the general public will never believe Cedric\'s story. The other figure watching with him, anXilien, points out that they will have to take care not to provoke Godzilla\'s wrath as they prepare to conquer the Earth.
