Gifford Rppc, ROOSTER ROCK, VISTA HOUSE, COLUMBIA RIVER GORGE, OREGON, 1924-1949:
$11.99

Rooster Rock is a large basalt feature located on the Oregon side of the Columbia River at River Mile 129, just below the base of Crown Point. The Lewis and Clark expedition reached Rooster Rock in 1805 and camped near it’s base. In 1841, Charles Wilkes, of the U.S. Exploring Expedition called Rooster Rock the “Obelisk” on his map. In “To and Fro, Up and Down, in Southern California, Oregon and Washington Territory” written by “Emma H. Adams” and published by “Cranston & Stowe” in 1886, it was called “Rooster Rock”. The Vista House was built in 1916 on the top of Crown Point, a large lava flow feature, at the same time as the Columbia River Highway. The highway is the only route to Crown Point. The House is a museum and serves as a memorial to Oregon pioneers and as a comfort station for travelers on the Historic Columbia River Highway. The site, situated on a rocky promontory, is 733 feet above the Columbia River on the south side of the gorge. The octagonal stone building was designed by Edgar M. Lazaruz in the style of Art Nouveau and completed in 1918 after nearly two years of construction. The House is called the Vista House for a reason and has great views of the Columbia River and Rooster Rock. The image is credited to “Gifford”. Benjamin Arthur Gifford, 1888 – 1927, was a well-known photographer in the Portland area. He established many different studios with various partners and by himself. He was an early photographer of Native Americans and the Columbia River for the Railroads. He retired in 1920 and his son Ralph Gifford continued to publish his fathers work as well as his own until 1936.
This photo could be either his fathers’ image or Ralphs. There is no dating on the card, but it has an AZO stamp box that was used between 1924-1949.
