This award was given on the 23rd. April 1905 by King Friedrich August III. donated for meritorious achievements. Those honored had a rank from sergeant down to soldier or, as civilians, were equivalent to these ranks. From April 8, 1910, women could also receive awards. From May 22, 1916, the same ribbon clasps as the Carola Medal were awarded for services in the war. For women this consisted of horizontal oak leaves and for men it was rectangular with rounded corners. Each has the inscription – World War 1914/16 - on it.
The medals were made of bronze. In 1918 medals made of copper-plated iron were awarded.
The medals were minted by Scharffenberg in Dresden from 1905-1907. From 1908 onwards, the Royal Saxon Mint in Muldenhütten minted the medals. By 1918, 240,750 bronze medals and 11,500 medals in (bronzed) iron were minted there. The stamps were made by Max Barduleck, medalist of the Saxon state mint.
