Gerald R. Ford was born in Omaha, Nebraska, in 1913, but grew up in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He was a star football player at the University of Michigan, where he won two national championships. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, earning the American Campaign Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with nine engagement stars, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon, and the World War II Victory Medal. He graduated from Yale Law School in 1941 and practiced law in Grand Rapids before entering politics.
He was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1948, representing Michigan's 5th District for nearly 25 years. He became the House Minority Leader in 1965 and the Vice President in 1973, after Spiro Agnew resigned. He became the President in 1974, after Richard Nixon resigned due to the Watergate scandal. He was the only person to become U.S. president without winning an election for president or vice president.
He married Elizabeth (Betty) Bloomer Warren in 1948 and had four children: Michael, Jack, Steven, and Susan. He was known for his honesty, integrity, and compassion. He died in 2006 at the age of 93.
