Rear Admiral George W. Melville [1841 1912] was anengineer, Arctic explorer and author. Melville served as the chief of the Bureau of Steam Engineering andheaded a time of great expansion, technological progress and change.Melville superintended the design of 120 ships and introduced the water-tube boiler, the triple-screw propulsion system, vertical engines, the floating repair ship and the \'\'distilling ship\'\'. Melville began his naval career in 1861 and was a veteran of the Civil War, serving on gunboats and sloops and took part in the capture of the CSS Florida in 1864. I n 1873 he made his first trip to the Arctic where he helped rescue survivors of the Polaris Expedition and was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal.Listed for sale is the autograph of Admiral George W. Melville signed on a card. The autograph is signed \'\'Geo Melville Engineer in Chief U.S. Navy\'\' in black fountain pen. The card measures 3.50 x 2.50 inches, it has trivial toning otherwise it is in fine condition. The autograph is authentic, uncommon to obtain and is a nice example of this noted explorer and naval commander.
