Initialed George & Martha Washington HandpaintedArmorial Cup & Saucer (2 Sets)Circa before 1872Cup: 3 7/16\" diameter at rim x 2 1/16\" high.Saucer: 5 11/16\"Written on the back of one as follows:\"This Cup is Facsimiti of those used byMartha Washington.At the first Martha Washington Hotel in New Yorkin 1872 under auspices of the St.John\'s Guild toraise money for the Floating babies Hospitalthese Cups were sold as Souveniers.Bought at Allias Bazaar 1916 by G.SW.\"As I understand it, there was a Martha Washington Hotelin New York before the grand one was completed in1903 which does not seem to be documented online.The history of the Floating Hospital is described inWikipedia in part but it\'s begining\'s were as follows:\"In the Summer of 1872,George F.Williams,a managingeditor of the New York Times,witnessed a policemanforcing a group of newsboys in City Hall Park off the grassand onto the concrete walkways which burned they\'re feet.When Williamsreturned to his office the next day, he wrotean appeal to the Times Readership for money to charter a boat tripfor the city\'s newsboys and bootblacks so they could be turnedloose on grassy shores of nearby waterways.\"So they\'re source is documented up until they were resoldin 1916 by Allias Bazaar.So basically this set would have been made around 1872reproducing the18th Century ChineseExport Porcelainowned by the Washington\'s.A beautiful set made around150 years ago.Cheers : )
