KALAT - Paul Franklin, 88, of Vero Beach and Osterville, Cape Cod, Massachusetts, died May 31, 2005 in Vero Beach after a brief illness. He was born August 17, 1916 in Worcester, Massachusetts. Paul and Virginia Lowry Kalat, his wife of 62 years, summer in Osterville and winter in Vero Beach, their primary residence. He graduated from Phillips Academy, Andover, Massachusetts. In 1940 he graduated from Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut and from the Yale NROTC as an Ensign in the U.S. Navy. After graduating from Yale, Mr. Kalat enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He served on ships in the Pacific theater and in 1941 took part in the invasion of Guadalcanal. He is quoted in Richard Tregaskis ''Guadalcanal Diary'' (1943). In 1942 he became a naval aviator. He flew from the aircraft carriers USS Ticonderoga and USS Hancock, which both were attacked by Japanese suicide planes.

VIRGINIA "PEACHY" LOWRY KALAT VERO BEACH, FL - Virginia, "Peachy", Lowry Kalat, 91, of Vero Beach, FL and formally of Osterville, MA passed away on Monday, December 31, 2012 peacefully at her home from declining health due to emphysema. Peachy celebrated life, including being born on July 4th, being married on Halloween, and passing away on New Year's Eve. How she loved sparklers and fireworks on July 4th! She came into and left this world with fireworks. Born in 1921, she was the daughter of John Lowry and Mildred Hill Lowry. She attended Miss Porter's School, Farmington, CT and Finch Junior College, New York, NY. After marrying Lt. Paul Franklin Kalat in 1942 and living on naval bases during the war, they settled in his hometown of Worcester, MA. She was president of the Junior League in Worcester and regional director. Peachy moved with her family to Providence, RI where her interests included being president of the Providence County Garden Club and president of the Rhode Island Senior Women's Golf Association. Her last move was to Vero Beach, FL when her husband retired. She was a member of the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America, Vero Beach Chapter and the Junior League of Vero Beach. Her marriage to her devoted husband lasted 62 years until his death in 2005. She spent most of her summersin Osterville, MA. Former member of Wianno Club in Osterville and The Beach Club in Centerville. Peachy's loved politics. Nationally, she was on the Executive Committee of the National Federation of Republican Women in the 1980s. State- wide she was president of the Rhode Island Federation of Republican Women as well as treasurer of the Rhode Island Republican Party. She was a member of the Electoral College from Rhode Island in the Presidential 1984 election.

George Herbert Walker Bush[a] (June 12, 1924 – November 30, 2018) was an American politician, diplomat, and businessman who served as the 41st president of the United States from 1989 to 1993.[2] A member of the Republican Party, he also served as the 43rd vice president from 1981 to 1989 under Ronald Reagan, and in various other federal positions prior to that.

Born into a wealthy, established family in Milton, Massachusetts, Bush was raised in Greenwich, Connecticut. He attended Phillips Academy and served as a pilot in the United States Navy Reserve during World War II before graduating from Yale and moving to West Texas, where he established a successful oil company. Following an unsuccessful run for the United States Senate in 1964, he was elected to represent Texas's 7th congressional district in 1966. President Richard Nixon appointed Bush as the ambassador to the United Nations in 1971 and as chairman of the Republican National Committee in 1973. President Gerald Ford appointed him as the chief of the Liaison Office to the People's Republic of China in 1974 and as the director of Central Intelligence in 1976. Bush ran for president in 1980 but was defeated in the Republican presidential primaries by Reagan, who then selected Bush as his vice presidential running mate. In the 1988 presidential election, Bush defeated Democrat Michael Dukakis.
