George B. Owen Clocks, 1878 Catalog Reprint

This is a reprint of the Geo. B. Owen & Co. clock catalog of 1878. Although George B. Owen is well known as General Manager of the William Gilbert Clock Company, it is not common knowledge that Owen formed an independent clock company at Winsted, CT about 1875 known as George B. Owen & Company. Clocks made by that firm had black walnut cases designed by Owen and generally had movements manufactured for them by the William Gilbert Clock Company. George B. Owen & Company ended abruptly when the firm\'s factory was destroyed by fire in 1879. However, clocks are occasionally found with the label of this firm.

Fortunately George B. Owen & Company issued a trade catalog with 38 pages showing their clocks. The remaining 40 pages of this catalog illustrated clocks manufactured by eight other Connecticut manufacturers and those have previously been shown in catalogs by the respective manufacturers. Therefore, it was decided to reproduce only the catalog pages showing Owen clocks and add a history of George B. Owen and his career.
