General Walter Bedell Smith [1895 1961]was a senior officer of the United States Army who served as General Dwight D. Eisenhower\'s chief of staff at Allied Forces Headquarters beginningin late 1942 until the end of the war. In May 1945, General Smith met representatives of the German High Command in Reims, France, to conduct the surrender of the German Armed Forces, and he signed the German Instrumentof Surrender on behalf of Eisenhower. After the war, he served as U.S. Ambassadorto the Soviet Union from 1946 to 1948. In 1950 he was appointed the Director of the Central Intelligence Agency. Under his leadership the CIA\'s primarilyresponsibility was covert operations. In 1953, he was appointed as the Under Secretary of State of the United States. During the Eisenhower Administrationhe held several high-levelposts.Listed for sale is a United Sates Army released photograph signed by General Walter Bedell Smith. The image was originally taken on 7 May 1945, it shows General Smith signinghis signature to the unconditional surrender document on behalf of the Allied High Command. General Smith is seated with Admiral M. Burroughs, Commander-in-Chief, Allied Naval Expeditionary Forces, General Ivan Susloparoff of the Russian Artillery and General Carl A. Spaatz, United States Air Force. The image is signed \'\'Walter B. Smith\'\' in black fountain pen. The photograph measures 5.00 x 4.00 inches, it has trivial toning otherwise it is in fine condition and is stamped U.S. Photograph on the verso along with bio iformation of the event photographed.The autograph of general Walter B. Smith is not common to obtain, this is a very desirable example signed on anoriginal U.S. Army released photograph taken at the signing of the German surrender, ending the war in Europe.
