BIO:General Hal Moore (Deceased) Vietnam Battle of Ia Drang. In the film “We WereSoldiers” Hal Moore was portrayed Mel Gibson in the movie. General Moore is a Recipientof the Distinguished Service Cross (2nd highest militarydecoration). He is also a recipient of the 3 Legion of Merits, 4 Bronze StarMedal with \"Valor\" Device, Purple Heart and 9 Air Medals.GeneralMoore graduated from West Point in 1945. Moore is remembered as the lieutenantcolonel in command of the 1st Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment, at the Battle ofIa Drang in 1965, during the Vietnam War.

Beginningon November 14th, 1965 Lt. Col. Moore led the 1st Battalion, 7thCavalry of the 3rd Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile) in the week-longBattle of Ia Drang. Encircled by enemy soldiers with no clear landing zone thatwould allow them to leave, Moore managed to persevere despite beingsignificantly outnumbered by North Vietnamese Army (NVA) forces that went on todefeat the 2nd Battalion, 7th Cavalry only two-and-a-half miles away the nextday. Moore\'s dictum that \"there is always one more thing you can do toincrease your odds of success\" and the courage of his entire command arecredited by Moore with this outcome.[11] Moore was wounded and earned a PurpleHeart, but because the wound wasn\'t serious, he tried unsuccessfully to returnthe medal and, denied that, he never wore the ribbon or the medal on his uniform.Blond haired Moore was known as \"Yellow Hair\" to his troops at thebattle at Ia Drang, and as a tongue-in-cheek homage making reference to thelegendary General George Armstrong Custer, who commanded as a lieutenantcolonel the same 7th Cavalry Regiment at the Battle of the Little Bighorn justunder a century before. Moore was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross forextraordinary heroism at Ia Drang. After the Battle of the Ia Drang Valley,Moore was promoted to colonel and took over the command of the Garry Owen (3rd)Brigade.

ThePresident of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July9, 1918 (amended by act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting theDistinguished Service Cross to Colonel (Infantry), [then Lieutenant Colonel]Harold Gregory Moore, Jr. (ASN: 0-27678), United States Army, for extraordinaryheroism in connection with military operations against an armed hostile forcein the Republic of Vietnam. During the period 14 through 16 November 1965,Colonel Moore, Commanding Officer, 1st Battalion, 7th Cavalry, 1st CavalryDivision (Airmobile), was participating with his unit in a vital search anddestroy operation in the la Drang Valley, Republic of Vietnam. Upon enteringthe landing zone with the first rifle company, Colonel Moore personallycommenced the fire-fight to gain control of the zone by placing accurate fire uponthe Viet Cong from an exposed position in his hovering helicopter. Throughoutthe initial assault phase, Colonel Moore repeatedly exposed himself to intensehostile fire to insure the proper and expedient deployment of friendly troops.By his constant movement and repeated exposure to this insurgent fire, ColonelMoore, with complete disregard for his own personal safety, set the standardfor his combat troops by a courageous display of \"leadership byexample\" which characterized all his actions throughout the long anddeadly battle. Inspired by his constant presence and active participationagainst the overwhelming insurgent hordes, the friendly forces solidified theirperimeter defenses and repulsed numerous Viet Cong assaults. On 15 November1965, the embattled battalion was again attacked by a three-pronged insurgentassault aimed at surrounding and destroying the friendly forces in one greatadvance. With great skill and foresight, Colonel Moore moved from position toposition, directing accurate fire and giving moral support to the defendingforces. By his successful predictions of insurgent attack plans, he was able tothwart all their efforts by directing barrages of small arms, mortar, andartillery fire in conjunction with devastating air strikes against Viet Congpositions and attack zones. As the grueling battle continued into the thirdday, another large Viet Cong strike was repulsed through Colonel Moore\'sability to shift men and firepower at a moment\'s notice against the savage,last-ditch efforts of the insurgents to break through the friendly positions.Colonel Moore\'s battalion, inspired by his superb leadership, combatparticipation, and moral support, finally decimate the well-trained andnumerically superior Viet Cong force so decidedly that they withdrew in defeat, leaving over 800 of their dead on the battlefield, and resulting in a greatvictory for the 1st Battalion. Colonel Moore\'s extraordinary heroism andgallantry in action were in keeping with the highest tradition of the United StatesArmy and reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
