Geologically Speaking …

Chrysocolla typically has a cyan (sky blue) color and malachite has a sea green color. Both are minor ores of copper. This specimen is relatively soft with a hardness between 2.5 and 3.0 and forms in the oxidation zones of copper ore bodies. In overly simplistic terms, it is rusty copper. It is most commonly found with quartz, limonite, azurite, and cupric and to the untrained eye it can be mistaken for turquoise.

Collecting Location:

These specimens come from Mina Maria, a copper mine from Sonora in northern Mexico just over the border fro Arizona.
