GREENE & DANIELS THREAD & YARN MANUFACTURING CO. - PAWTUCKET, R. I. -1881 LETTER:
$45.00

We are offering an 1881 letter from Greene & Daniels Manufacturing Company, Manufacturers of Thread & Yarn [Pawtucket, Rhode Island]. Benjamin F. Greene founded the company on the banks of the Pawtucket River in 1860 when construction began, and the complex wasn't completed until 1866.The letterhead had a really nice steel-cut engraved vignette of their manufacturing complex, with a huge 5-story building with a dormered roof, twin towers and fire escapes, and a smokestack in the background. Also in the engraving are several other smaller buildings, surrounded by flat rural land with some low rolling hills and several groups of small houses that possibly housed their 400 employees and, of course, a church. [Greene & Daniels was a major developer of the neighborhood of Pleasant View that grew up around the mill.]
The engraving shows a horse-drawn delivery wagon backed up to a door on the ground floor of the clock tower. The door is open and standing in the doorway are two men who apparently had just loaded up the wagon for a delivery. Another delivery wagon and a horse-drawn carriage are crossing the bridge over the river, and a third delivery wagon, carriages and people are on the road.
The letter is to Mr. H. M. Gan, Agent. It reads, "Your yarns of 29th at hand, the first of the 2/22s will be the same stock as the 1/30s we are now sending, and the new cotton will follow right in, without any break. We have the spinning all in for your 3,000 [??] 1/30 weekly and are emptying spools as rapidly as possible. Have not received a spool from you in two days. Probably a good lot of them will come tomorrow. Yours truly, Geo. P. Grant, Agent".
**NOTE** - for decades the mill complex lay vacant and decaying but from 1987 to the mid-90s, it underwent a renovation by Blackstone, Inc. and Collette Vacations which preserved the integrity of the original buildings. One half of the complex consists of 82 condominium units called "Blackstone Landing"; and the other half serves as headquarters for the 200 full-time employees of "Collette Vacations". One of the buildings has The Preservation Society of Pawtucket plaque "Greene and Daniels Mill Complex, Mill No. 1, Built 1860-1866" with a depiction of the complex, the river and the bridge.
